Mealtimes provide good opportunities to be mindful.


When eating, try to keep awareness of:

  • The taste of the food.
  • The texture of the food.
  • The movements of your tongue and jaw.
  • The movement of food around the mouth.
  • The act of swallowing.
  • The movement of food down the the oesophagus and into the stomach.
  • The movements involved in preparing another spoonful of food and bringing it to the mouth.


Eating slowly helps to keep awareness and avoids overeating.


Placing your spoon in your bowl between mouthfuls helps you to eat slowly.


Avoiding loading your spoon again until the previous mouthful is in your stomach can also help you to eat slowly.
